OSHA inspections for Overhead Cranes and Hoists

OSHA (20-CFR 1910.179(J)) requires general industries to complete three types of inspections. Initial, Frequent, and Periodic.

  1. INITIAL Prior to initial use all new and altered cranes shall be inspected to ensure compliance with the provisions of this section.
  2. FREQUENT The following items shall be inspected for defects at intervals, including observation during operation between regular inspections.
    • Deterioration or leakage
    • Hooks with deformation or cracks
    • Hoist chains & wire rope for excessive wear, twist, distortion, and noncompliance
  3. PERIODIC Complete inspection of the crane performed at intervals as defined based on activity, severity of service, and environment.

Periodic Inspection Criteria:

The following items shall be examined during the operational testing:

  • Crane condition, bumpers, structure, connections, couplings, and tieback
  • Wheels, gears, bearings, gear boxes/reducer, motors for proper operation
  • Brakes, worn disc or pads
  • Control panels, contactors, disconnect, inverter, electrical wiring
  • Chain length measured and inspected for stretch, wear, breaks
  • Sheaves measured with gauge and inspected for excessive wear
  • Hook measured for wear, twist, bends, and increased hook throat opening
  • Electrical Collectors and shoes for wear
  • Trolley connection to hoist
  • Pendant controls, festooning, and cable condition
  • Runway elevation and clearance
  • Deflection and assembly of boom, head, and mast
  • Deterioration or leakage in lines, tanks, valves, drain pumps, and other parts of air or hydraulic systems

Note: A crane inspection report will be written for each system detailing the inspection and deficiencies found. Any deficiencies listed shall be carefully examined and determination made as to whether they constitute a safety hazard. To follow will be a repair parts quote providing suggested repairs and costs.
