CFR 1910.184 and ASME B30.9 outline the general requirements for daily and periodic inspections. Regulations require that all slings receive a thorough inspection at least once per year by a factory-trained representative. Each day before using, the sling, all fastenings, and attachments shall be inspected for damage or defects by a competent person designated by the employer. Additional inspections shall be performed prior to each use where severe conditions warrant. Damaged or defective slings shall be immediately removed from service.

B30.20 regulations require that all below the hook devices receive a thorough inspection at least once per year by a factory-trained representative. Each day before using, prior to use various items and attachments shall be inspected for damage or defects by a competent person designated by the employer. Additional inspections shall be performed prior to each use where severe conditions warrant. Damaged or defective below the hook devices shall be immediately removed from service.

ASME B30.26 outlines the requirements for various types of Rigging Hardware. Prior to use, all new, altered, modified, or repaired rigging hardware shall be inspected by a designated person to verify compliance with the applicable provisions.

Inspection Overview

The items examined but not limited to are as follows:

  • Marking, construction, and installation
  • Cutting, nicking, or gouging
  • Proper installation of attachments, hooks, and slings
  • Stretched, twisted, or bent
  • Shock loading, unbalanced loading, overloading
  • Punctures and Abrasions
  • Temperature and chemical burns
  • Excessive pitting or corrosion
  • Weld splatter

Note: A written report of each deficiency found will be noted and quoted accordingly. Any deficiencies listed shall be carefully examined and determination made as to whether they constitute a safety hazard. To follow will be a repair parts quote providing suggested repairs and costs.
